The London News Express

The Foreign Affairs Council held in Luxembourg was marked by urgent discussions about the dire situation in Ukraine. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and Defence Minister Rustem Umerov conveyed alarming reports of heightened Russian bombardment, including the firing of 7000 guided bombs in just four months. The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, emphasized the pressing need for the European Union and Ukraine’s allies to take decisive action.

Borrell outlined the critical need for air defense systems and ammunition to support Ukraine in defending itself against Russia’s aggression. He proposed the coordinated delivery of these essential resources at the EU level, with several member states expressing readiness to provide specific assistance. Borrell stressed the urgency of the situation, emphasizing the impact of Russian attacks on Ukraine’s electricity system and the need to address the lack of conventional ammunition.

In addition to the discussions on Ukraine, the Council also addressed the escalating tensions in the Middle East and the risk of further escalation in the broader region. Concerns about Iran’s destabilizing actions and its support for Russia prompted the agreement to expand the existing drones regime to impose sanctions on Iran, covering missile production and potential transfers to Russia and the wider Middle East region.

The meeting also highlighted the grim situation in Gaza, with no progress on the release of hostages, a lack of prospects for a ceasefire, and ongoing humanitarian catastrophe. The Council concluded by affirming the necessity of inviting the Israeli Foreign Minister and the new Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority to future meetings to address the escalating crisis.
