U.S. Blocks Draft U.N. Resolution on Palestinian State Membership

The London News Express

The recent move by the United States to block a draft resolution allowing the United Nations General Assembly to vote on Palestinian state membership has sparked significant backlash within the global community. The rejection of the resolution, which would have granted full member status to Palestine, has intensified global divisions particularly in the midst of Israel’s war on Gaza.

Among the 15 U.N. Security Council members, the U.S. stood alone in its opposition to the resolution, while 12 including prominent nations such as Russia, China, France, and Japan, voted in favor. Notably, the U.K. and Switzerland chose to abstain from the vote.

Although currently holding the status of Permanent Observer at the U.N., allowing participation in proceedings but not voting on draft resolutions and decisions, Palestine had in 2011 sought full U.N. membership. However, it was abandoned following pressure from the U.S.

The renewed submission for reconsideration of full U.N. membership by the Palestinian Authority prompted a strong response from the U.S., which was disregarded by President Mahmoud Abbas. The move has garnered criticism from various quarters, including the Council on American-Islamic Relations, which condemned the veto as unjust.

The U.N. Security Council’s failure to pass the resolution has reignited debate on the limitations and dynamics of the global institution. With the exclusive veto power held by five permanent members, concerns have been raised about the representation and decision-making for the world’s population.

The rejection of the resolution has elicited contrasting reactions from the involved parties. Israeli Ambassador Gilad Erdan expressed disappointment, accusing the majority of the nations of rewarding Palestinian terror. On the other hand, Palestinian-American diplomat Riyad Mansour remained resolute, emphasizing the determination of the Palestinian people towards achieving statehood.

The U.S.’s unwavering support for Israel has resulted in increasing isolation within the international community. President Joe Biden has exhibited a shift in tone, particularly in addressing the human toll of the conflict in Gaza, while maintaining support for Israel’s security.
