As excitement builds around Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s TGL golf league, details about its structure and format have been revealed. The inaugural season promises to revolutionize the sport, combining virtual golf events, modern match play, and a unique scoring system.
The TGL Teams:
TGL will feature six teams, with four players each. Five team franchises have been announced, based in Los Angeles, Boston, New York, Atlanta, and San Francisco, with the last team yet to be unveiled. Twenty-four PGA Tour pros have already committed to TGL, adding to the anticipation surrounding this groundbreaking league.
The Modern Match Play Format:
TGL’s inaugural season will embrace a modified match play format called “Modern Match Play.” Matches will consist of 15 holes, with a mix of triples and singles matches. Triples will feature 3-v-3 alternate shot matches, while singles matches will comprise head-to-head encounters with a rotating twist. The uniqueness of this format lies in the fact that players will face different opponents on each hole, adding an extra layer of excitement and strategy.
Modern Match Play Scoring:
Unlike traditional match play scoring, TGL introduces a simplified approach. Every hole is worth one point, with the team making the fewest strokes claiming that point. In the case of a tie on a hole, no points are awarded, and there are no carryovers. The team accumulating the most points by the end of the 15-hole match will be declared the winner. In the event of a tie, a thrilling overtime round will take place, featuring a 3-on-3 closet-to-the-pin competition to determine the victor.
Season Long Scoring and Playoffs:
The TGL season will employ a point system similar to that of the National Hockey League. Teams will earn two points for a win in regulation or overtime, while a loss in overtime grants one point. A regulation loss does not award any points. Throughout the 15-match regular season, points will accumulate to determine the top four teams advancing to the single-elimination semifinals. The winners of the semifinals will then compete in a best-of-three series to decide the championship winner.
The SoFi Center and the Virtual Golf Course:
The TGL matches will be held at the state-of-the-art SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Specifically designed for virtual golf events, the center boasts a 65-foot screen into which the players will hit their shots. The virtual golf course covers an area roughly the size of a football field and incorporates cutting-edge technology. One remarkable feature is the “Green Zone,” a custom-built complex with a putting surface that adapts to various slopes, providing players with a multitude of challenges.
As the TGL golf league prepares for its highly anticipated inaugural season, the disclosed format promises to offer an exciting and unique golfing experience. With a blend of virtual golf, modern match play, and an innovative scoring system, TGL is poised to captivate fans worldwide. Stay tuned for more updates as this revolutionary league revolutionizes the game of golf.
