Formula 1 continues to champion diversity and inclusion in motorsport with the expansion of its partnership with the all-female racing series, F1 Academy. Set to develop and cultivate young female drivers, the F1 Academy has added a significant boost to its upcoming seasons by securing support from all ten current F1 teams.
With the aim of nurturing talented female drivers and propelling them to higher levels of competition, the F1 Academy is an exciting addition to the motorsport landscape. Debuting in the 2023 season, the series features five teams, each consisting of three drivers. The announcement of a seven-race schedule for 2023 culminating in the prestigious Austin race during F1’s United States Grand Prix further solidified the F1 Academy’s commitment to providing a platform for young women to succeed.
In a groundbreaking development, the F1 Academy revealed that starting from the 2024 season, ten drivers will be nominated by the ten F1 teams to compete in the series under their respective team’s livery. This move signifies a monumental step towards inspiring the next generation of female drivers and showcasing the F1 community’s support for the F1 Academy’s goals.
Susie Wolff, the Managing Director of F1 Academy, expressed gratitude for the collaborative decision, stating, “First and foremost, I want to thank the Formula 1 teams for their support and vision as we embark on this journey together. This landmark moment not only demonstrates the depth of support for F1 Academy from across the F1 community but will inspire a whole generation of young girls to realize the opportunities both on and off track in motorsport.”
Under the leadership of Stefano Domenicali, the President and CEO of Formula 1, the F1 Academy aims to generate real and lasting change by establishing a system that enables young female talent to pursue and achieve their dreams. Domenicali emphasized the importance of this collaboration, highlighting the impact and support the project has garnered thus far.
Aligned with the F1 calendar, the F1 Academy’s schedule for the upcoming season will integrate their races alongside Formula 2 and Formula 3, magnifying the visibility of the series on grand prix weekends. This exciting development further raises the global awareness and profile of the F1 Academy, with the added significance of F1 liveries gracing the grid.
Though details regarding the drivers and liveries nominated by F1 teams will be shared at a later date, it is reassuring to know that the remaining five drivers will receive support from other partners involved in the initiative.
As the 2023 F1 Academy season progresses, the next area of focus seems to be expanding television coverage of the races. As the current format offers only highlight packages, the series would significantly benefit from live coverage, allowing fans to witness the achievements of these talented young drivers firsthand.
